Why should I spend money on marketing?

This is a question we are rarely asked face to face, but it is the unspoken question we know we have to constantly address to show value to our clients. By answering this question, we gain new clients–believers–and start to create a following of people that realize that great marketing and branding does matter to them. And, in the best scenario, frankly a good marketing partner makes the “daily grind” more enjoyable.

Here are three reasons why spending money on marketing counts in a deeper way:

1. Your message matters to you, so present it proudly.

It’s why you started your business…why wouldn’t you want to present it in the best light possible? It is sort of like having a beautiful diamond necklace for the love of your life, but giving it to her wrapped in an old grocery bag. Presentation matters. This is true in an interview, a first date or on your wedding day and definitely true when it comes to your brand.

2. People will take you seriously.

Honesty is important to us. So let us tell you that if you don’t spend time and money on your marketing, people are NOT taking you seriously. If you don’t pay attention to the details of how your company markets itself, others, whether consciously or not, may feel like your longevity and trustworthiness is not up to par. If you spend the time working with a marketing expert developing messaging and visuals for your brand the effort will show, giving you results and a better job reaching that target market. Potential customers will see that effort, putting you into a different category of professionalism and quality. You are kidding yourself if you think just because your product/service is good that it will ‘speak for itself’ and that the rest doesn’t matter. This is even more true if your competition is putting in the effort, making you appear that you can’t be bothered with that sort of thing.

3. People will actually know your company exists.

Having just a website or a storefront isn’t enough anymore. In both cases you are spending serious money on overhead, but if no one knows you are there, then what does that matter? Marketing experts are trained to know how to best get your message across. They will have ideas on what has worked in the past and where the future is heading. We don’t claim to know everything (and with technology and channels changing so quickly there is always something new to learn) but we know where it’s headed and know where to look to find the answers. Telling stories is what marketing and design experts do best. It’s their job to get you noticed. How is that not a worthwhile endeavour? That is worth investing in. Getting noticed by the right people is the name of the game, the bottom line. Without customers, without a voice, without an audience there is no show.

If you don’t have anything to say, then maybe spending money on marketing isn’t for you. But if you see the value of being heard, you need to look into finding a marketing partner and you need to get a move on.

Take the time to budget, plan and find a team of experts that make your heart sing. Find one that strives to understand you and your business so well that they will treat it like it’s their own business. They should be your support team, your entourage to make you look good all the time. They should be there to do your make-up, pick your clothes, document your story and share it with the world in the way only top PR people know how to do.
