Why the name Switchback?

We’ve been asked a few times lately where our company name comes from. Well, how does anyone decide what to name his or her business? There are always the questions of will it make sense to others? Will it be relevant in the marketplace? Will it stand the test of time? And most importantly, does the name accurately represent who we are?

Anyone that has gone through the sweat and joy of starting and naming their own company will know that just like naming your child (we don’t know this first hand, but are assuming), you go through a million options, then you just start whittling away at them until you find one you both love and can agree on.

If you hike or mountain bike, you will know that switchbacks are your best friend when you are on a long, upward journey or trail.

When it came to naming our company, Trevor and I went through a similar process. We knew that we wanted the name to reference our favourite and most inspiring things – adventure and some sort of mountain biking or outdoor slant. These are the things that motivate, drive, refresh, connect and inspire us in all that we do. This is the type of work we want and the lifestyle we live.

If you hike or mountain bike, you will know that switchbacks are your best friend when you are on a long, upward journey or trail. They get you from the lowest point to the peak, at a methodical and consistent pace. Nowhere in this are we saying it’s an easy path to take, but these well designed scenic routes, called switchbacks, are deeply satisfying and give you bite-size pieces of challenging terrain. As long as you keep at it and know where you are headed, the switchback will get you there.

That’s exactly how we see what we do as a business. We embrace that sense of curiosity and adventure when starting a journey with our clients. This involves lots of bite-size marketing terrain that’s manageable and focused. The overall goal, driven by passion and determination to reach the peak destination for that season and to make it to the top and enjoy the view. This is the process that motivates and drives us, personally and professionally.

Is it possible for a name to say that much? We hope so.

Adventurously yours,
Suzy + Trevor
