A team reflects their leadership. A great team reflects great leadership and a mediocre team reflects a mediocre leadership. It is easy to notice teams in a constant pursuit of professional (and personal) development in both reflection and action. Leadership is an ART. As an ongoing process of learning, and an effective leader is not created overnight. There is continuous transformation as a person and a team.

Create the environment. Culture is essential to a successful team. When you create a leadership environment, everyone can be a leader in their own way and feel supported, safe, secure, and comfortable to do so. “Elite teams have leaders at all levels.” These teams develop and nurture selflessness and success becomes a reality.
There is a difference between leadership and authority. Authorities dictate and people don’t usually follow, they just do what they are told. Leaders take charge and inspire others. When you are an inspiration, you make those around you feel safe. Creating a loyal and trusting team builds a sense of comfort. Can you imagine how strong a team based in loyalty and trust would be? Not only would they feel secure to go above and beyond, but they can also remain calm under pressure and this can give you a competitive advantage.
Adapt to change and transformation. Businesses change, especially if you’re in a dynamic industry, and great leaders know when it is time to change. It is necessary for leaders to communicate this change and why it is essential, to ensure that each team member understands how their role will be impacted and what is required of them, communicate what you as a leader are doing to provide support in this period of transition, and ensure constant communication and feedback.
Prioritize “Servant Leadership.” Serve first and eat last, so to say. This concept of “servant leadership” emphasizes that you as a leader will ask nothing of your team that you haven’t done or aren’t willing to do yourself. And, periodically doing work with your team lets them know that you still care about them and what they contribute to the overall team.
Traditionally, officers eat last. This is a simple, yet impactful, gesture of leadership. “When you sacrifice for your team, they will sacrifice for you.” With that being said, it is essential that your team has the right resources to execute good work. Simply projecting strength and positivity affects your team atmosphere, environment, and culture.
Transformation does not happen overnight and becoming a leader takes a conscious effort and attention. Ask yourself “am I being the best possible leader I can right now?” every day and challenge your team to reflect on the same notion.
